How to play avi files in Quicktime?

I am not able to play avi files on my new Powerbook. I read that I may need to purchase an mpeg4 plugin for Quicktime from Apple. Is this the only way or is there a 'free' method?

Search MacUpdate for MPlayer OS X or VLC.
Either of these should be able to handle .avi files.

Check out divx.com for the current divx codec which is free.
Or check out VLC, like cybergoober said:

I have Quicktime pro 6.5 (I think?) and it will not play .avi or waves files. Should it? I would think it should but maybe I dont have something set up correctly...
