what to do when mail import hangs

what to do when mail import hangs

mail 2 is importing my old messages, it starts ok, but then it hangs on "imported 597 of 6563 messages". it can't get beyond this point, and the time remaining simply starts increasing (now it's up to 8 hours!)

i saw another thread here about how to import manually -- but that is for those smart people who have backed up their ~/Library/Mail before installing Tiger. I didn't.

Any idea what I can do in this case?
