Install 9.2.1 before X (was: Classic works fine. OS 9 freezes before happy mac)

I chose to re-install my system from scratch--including repartition the disk. Changing two things helped:

1) I installed 9.2.1 first. The "welcome" book has this as step one--maybe I should have read it.

Installing X first worked fine, but the 9.2.1 refused to boot.

2) I made the X disk partition 7 instead of 8 gigs. I realize that there are hidden partitions on these disks, so just to be safe I made the X partition small enough in case it wasn't the first one.

These older machines require that X be in the first 8 gigs of the drive.
