Question DVD playback - full screen problem

i have used several dvd's (most notably North By Northwest) where when when i view the movie at the "maximum size", it fills the screen horizontally from end to end (while keeping the destop visible above and below the picture). however, when i change the viewing option to "fill screen" so that only the movie is visible, the picture becomes very small (no longer filling the screen horizontally). it actually looks like the picture is the "normal size" against the black background.

the os 9 version was able to show the movie at maximum size when you filled the screen with the movie.

of course, the fact that the movie loses NO frames when in the background on the destop (with 5 other apps open of course)
makes this problem seem insignificant.

thanks for any help.
