connecting mac g5 to PC host for internet sharing?

hello, I am new to networking and would like some assistance in connecting my g5 to my pc. the previous connection was set up by a friend and i didn't really follow what he was doing, i swear i'll listen this time and share your knowledge with anyone else in need. my pc connects to the internet as follows:

cable modem attatches to an 8 port switch, this then connects to my pc (both connections are via ethernet) giving me an internet connection on the pc - no sweat. the reason i use the switch is because my ibook was connected here. there was no problem sharing files or use of the web.

i now want to connect my g5 to the switch to share the internet connection.....I've done nothing yet other than pug in the cable to the g5 and the switch. i'm good at breaking things (a few damaged connections you've fixed in the past have probably been caused by me at some point) this doesn't seem to do anything at all?

help me please

'... help me please', replace the 'switch' (which cannot assign individual local IP addresses to multiple connected computers) with a 'router' (which can assign individual local IP addresses to multiple connected computers).
