Need recommendation for ethernet card on old Mac

My old computer - Performa 6400/200 - is on loan to a lady for use as an e-mailer/internet connection. It works on a 56k dial-up.

BUT...

She has signed up to broadband... didn't ask me first - and now has a cable modem (and a contract!!) that needs either a USB or an ethernet connection. I put a spare USB card in the PCI slot, but it won't work. Card (Adaptec) needs 9.2.2 but machine is running 9.0.4.

Will ethernet work with 9.0.4 on this machine?

Can anyone recommend an ethernet card (7 inch PCI) that will work?

As a last resort could I install 9.2.2 on the Performa? Mactracker says 9.1 is the highest.

Otherwise she stays with dial-up and tries to cancel the ntl contract. She can't afford a newer computer.

OS 9 Helper will allow MacOS 9 to be installed on the Performa. I strongly recommend using an Ethernet card rather than USB. To find one, you may look here. Your computer has a PDS slot which accepts an Apple Ethernet Com II card. You can find such a card at venerable used Mac retailer Shreve Systems.

For Your Consideration: The Performa 6400 is a very old machine. Many of these shipped with Ethernet card built-in. You may be able to buy a complete Performa 6400/w Ethernet for the price of the upgrades.
