Apparently 'disabled' Airport Card

I've recently installed an Airport card in my dual USB iBook running OS X 10.3.9. According to Internet Connect, Airport power is 'on' but I am unable to connect to my wireless router as no networks are available. However, according to System Profiler, 'Airport is currently turned off.' If I check in Network Utility, the MAC address of the card is correctly shown under Ethernet Interface en2 so the computer is obviously speaking to the card. I know that my router is working correctly as I've tried it with two different computers and a D-Link USB dongle with the iBook, all of which have checked out correctly.

How do I enable the Airport card in this situation? It is frustrating to say the least and any guidance will be gratefully received.

I don't know about how its setup on your computer but on mine I have the wireless network connection bar at the top and it tells me my signal strength. The only way for me to disable my wireless network card is by clicking that and then click turn off. hope that helps, if not then let me know and i'll post a more specific reply when I'm infront of a mac

Yes, that's exactly the same on mine. Clicking 'turn Airport off' changes the greyed-out fan icon into a wedge of cheese (pardon the rudimentary descriptions) and clicking 'turn Airport on' reverts to the greyed-out fan. However, it remains turned off in System Profiler regardless of what I do elsewhere. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

I'm not a perfession in macs but when it comes to my PC experiance, I would first try seeing if its a bad wireless card. Are you able to get it replaced by taking it back to the store?

No, the card definitely isn't faulty - I tried it out in my G4 Power Mac and it worked like a charm, connected to my wireless network perfectly and found a load of others too. The fault must be somewhere in the iBook which has all teh latest software updates applied. I'm completely at a loss with this!
