Question Network Trouble: PPC to Intel

I have hit a brick wall with this for months - it really should work but doesn't seem to.

Intel Macbook OSx 10.4.9 and PPC G4 Osx 10.4.8

Connected by a crossover network cable.

Filesharing is working in both directions.

Firewall turned off on both machines.

Here is the problem:

When I try to connect from the Intel to the PPC using VPN, Teleport or Network Midi the machines recognize each other. However when I try to connect via any of these protocls I get a network timeout message in every situation. I am able to send audio over the network from the PPC to the Intel but not the other way. I think that this must be a symptom of the same problem.

Just tried pinging from the intel and it doesn't work, despite the fact the g4 harddrives are mounted.

Each one has a static ip address for the local network, and I have tried the same using a firewire cable to no avail. Filesharing works both ways, the machines see each other (eg in VPN), but then when i try to connect I get a timeout message.

Does anyone have any suggestions? It's really wierd.

so coincidentally just as i had posted i managed to fix this, by altering from manual ip address input to automatic DHCP. wierd. still don't understand, but if it's not broke...

Probably you had a gateway address selected that simply wasn't around. One of the machines must be the selected gateway.

If you enter IP information by hand, you have to enter it yourself. DHCP requires at least one device providing information.

You can also write down the settings as they are now and save the for later use. Apparantly you have a DHCP server in the network (odd when using an cross-cable unless the INTEL is setup as dhcp server). In that case the INTEL machine ip-number is also the gateway address. Also write down the DNS numbers as they are important too.

Good luck, Kees
