Custom folder icons on SMB share

I have an interesting problem. In my office we are slowly transitioning all of our Mac users to connecting to our servers using SMB. I have one group that has developed an elaborate organizational scheme using custom folder icons. While this works fine using AFP, when connecting using SMB those icons are lost. Also, I cannot reapply custom icons to folders on an SMB share using the traditional method. I also tried applying custom icons to folders on the share from a Windows computer, unfortunately the Macs could not see the custom icons.

All of our Macs are running 10.4.6 or later, and the servers are running Windows Server 2003.

Is there any way to get custom icons to work in this situation?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.
