how to debug mail server connection?

Usign Entourage client, I'm successfully connecting to get mail from the mail service running on my Tiger Server. But, using the same settings from a Windows Mobile PDA (PocketPC phone), I can't connect (never get past the "connecting" status). Any tricks here I should know about?

What authentication methods are you using on the server? Perhaps the phone doesn't support the auth methods you're using. Do you have SSL enabled on the server? Are you getting an error on the phone? Are you able to send from the phone through your server?

In the Mail service of Server Admin, in the Advanced tab, in the Security panel, I see "Login" and "PLAIN" checked under SMTP and "Login" and "Clear" checked under IMAP. SSL are set to "don't use" for both SMTP and IMAP/POP. So, I've got my phone set not to use SSL and to use IMAP.

after a while of "Connecting", it just says "mail could not be downloaded". It never even gets to "logging in" (on the receive side). When connected (this is though the "Work", VPN, connection, which does occur) I can ping my server by name.

Can you set your phone to POP and if so, does that work?

Have you tried creating a "test" user on the server, sending mail to it and then trying the test account on your phone?

even though I have POP turned off on the server and am using IMAP? Or are you suggesting I turn on and try POP? What are the ports to use, for IMAP and POP on the client side?

Do you mean trying a different user account? I'm using it with my account on the server right now (unsuccessfully). Are you saying it might be failing for just the one user?

Thanks!!

Mike
