Network preferences - perptual error message

I have Tiger. When I open the Network system preferences, it pops up a dialogue which says, "Your network settings have been changed by another application."

I dismiss it, but it pops up again.

I dismissed it dozens of times but it keeps coming back.

Its a corruption with the 10.4.11 update. First you'll need to force quit out of system preferences. Navigate to the root of your HD, then go to library/preferences/system configuration. There should be 5 or 6 .plist files there. Take them and drag them to the desktop. This will make copies of the files so you will be able to delete the originals. After doing this grab the originals and trash those. This action will prompt you for your password, so authenticate to proceed. Once you've done this just go ahead and restart. After restarting take the copies from your desktop and trash those.

WARNING: After performing this procedure you will need to set up your network configurations before going online again, because all this will be gone. If you are using a high speed connection acquiring an address through DHCP that is easily remedied, but regardless you will need to fumble around with your network settings to get the apply button to not be grayed out. Once you apply on some subtle change in network preferences it should show the connections as active again.
