| hosting?
Greetings all, I am currently on G4 running OSX 10.0 and was wondering if is possible to host a couple of web pages from this machine. I know nothing about this type of thing and am relatively new to Mac in general. What I envision is having a home page with some links for other pages - one of which would be an on-line database. Anyone have any clues? Thanks |

You can go into the preferances and turn on "web sharing". That'll let people on the net connect to your computer when they type in your ip followed by ~username/ your files will be kept in the "sites" folder in your home directory. Need more help? |

Hey thanks for the response, I tried the suggestions about setting the sharing and so forth, but no go, I can see my page from my browser, but my brother back in the states can't see it... please let me know if anyone here can see it - that would help a lot... http://120.240.115.31/~jcraggs/ or maybe this one http://bjs1-dhcp244.studby.uio.no/~jcraggs/ JD |

| Some suggestions
Well, some suggestions are to upgrade to OS 10.2 (or wait for 10.3, Panther), as the networking systems are much easier to use & set up. But, pretty much, to set up a page is to put the html files & images into the sites folder, go to the Sharing System Prefs panel, and turn on Personal Web Sharing. That's the most basic way of doing it. You can set up a dynamic DNS to point to your IP address dynamic (try www.dyndns.org, free). By the way, can't get to your webpage with the link you provided. Do you have a static IP for the actual computer? http://120.240.115.31/~jcraggs/ doesn't seem to work. Also, check to see if there are any firewalls that are in operation that might block your ability to serve out html. Finally, check your local computer to see if the Web server is running. The local default IP number for your computer should be "127.0.0.1" (no quotes). If you type that in and the Web site for your Mac comes up, you are serving out pages. If not, you need to turn on Web services. The troubleshoot with any net admin you might have to see what restrictions might be in place.
