Backing up with Time Machine to an encrypted drive over a network

Machine I'm backing up is called Alice.

The disk I'm backing up to is connected to a computer called Bob.

Can I write Time Machine backups to an encrypted drive connected to another machine? I'm having trouble.

I can back up easily to a disk connected to Bob that isn't encrypted, having enabled the writing to unsupported volumes thingumy.

If I mount the encrypted volume onto Alice (still over the network) I can view and edit the files but I can't seem to choose this as my destination in Time Machine. It just doesn't appear as a destination.

If I mount the encrypted volume on Bob (where it's plugged into) and share it I can't seem to see this from Alice. It just doesn't appear at all, while other volumes appear fine.

Any ideas? I'm doing all sharing via afp at the moment. To be honest haven't tried with Samba. Might try that now!...
