NIS, NFS, amd and Panther

Howdy! I am trying to setup a G5 running Panther on a fairly standard UNIX network using NIS as the directory service, NFS to share files and amd to handle the automounting. I was able to get NIS working without much trouble by following the superb directions on Marcel Bresink's website.

Marcel's website mentions amd, but doesn't explain how to set it up. It looks like that is something he will add in the future. So, my question is, has anyone tried this setup using Panther (or Jaguar even) and gotten it to work?

When I tried to set it up, it appeared to startup, but it isn't automounting and whenever I try the query tool, amq, I get a cryptic message saying this program hasn't registered with RPC. I wish I understood this part better, but I know only enough UNIX to get myself in trouble.

Any comments, suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Not too many folks using NIS and am-utils, I guess. Well, I e-mailed the amd developers and Ahmon Dancy was kind enough to reply. He told me the version of amd that shipped with Mac OS X was broken and to build the latest version available from ftp.am-utils.org. I did that and it works great!
