Question Printer drivers available for local printer but not for networked one?

When I plug my Canon S900 printer into my Powerbook (OS 10.3) it auto-recognizes the printer and uses the proper drivers. However, if I plug it into my WinXP machine and try to connect to the shared printer from the Mac I can't choose any S900 drivers, the closest match is the Canon S800 CUPS drivers. Even if I install the S900 drivers downloaded from Canon's Web site I still cannot choose the printer from the drivers list. Any suggestions?

It's little annoyances like this that just keep adding up with this thing.

linuxprinting.org/macosx/ shows Gimp-Print support for the S800 - I wonder if they are similar?

The Gimp-Print S800 driver should already be on your Panther computer.

Yes, that is the one that I use, though it would make sense that if I already have S900 drivers I should be able to use those. It seems stupid to have to have different drivers for network printers than local printers. Even in Windows you can use the same driver for both, why not on a Mac? The S900 has OS X native drivers.

Oh, I didn't understand your first post correctly.... duh. So the question is, can you print to the Windows printer now, using the S800 cups + Gimp-Print driver?

I agree - somebody, somewhere, in Cupertino needs to look at how Windows handles drivers/network printing and make OS X a whole lot more "plug & play."

You'll have to add an Apple Laserwriter PS printer to the PC for the USB sharing to work. I have the Epson 925 and it works perfect.

In your browser, open http://127.0.0.1:631

You should see your Canon printer.

Configure the printer on your Windows PC These steps are specifically for Windows 2000 Pro. Adapt for other Windows environments.

Open your Printers control panel

Select the Add Printer Wizard.

Select "Network Printer".

Select "Connect to a printer on the internet or your intranet"

Enter the URL thus: http://server:631/printers/printer

server will be the NetBIOS name of your Mac if you have names resolution such asWINS or DNS available on your LAN; if not, replace server with the IP address of the Mac.

printer is the Print Queue name of your printer.

Click Continue to the next pane. You will get an informative message like "Theserver on which the blah blah blah printer resides does not have the correct printer installed. If you want to install on your local printer click ok"

Click ok!

Select any Apple LaserWriter Postscript Printer as follows:

Select Manufacturer = Apple

Select any postscript printer, e.g. Apple Color LW 12/660 PS

Click continue.

Select Yes or No to whether you want the printer to be default and finish.

If in your browser window, you see something like this;

Description: Canon S900
Location: G4Desktop example
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.
Device URI: file:///dev/null

Then the URL you would enter would be;

http://G4Desktop:631/Canon_S900/printer

Use no spaces, put an underline between for spaces.
