Unhappy Unable to connect to Proxy

Anytime I try to open a streaming video in a browser for windows media player I get the error "Unable to connect to Proxy".
If I try to use ftp:// I can't open anything. I have turned off my firewall and shut down all security and I still get nothing. (I turned it back on after that experiment)
I have OSX and I looked under help and all it said was tough luck.
I unchecked all proxies in location => Network Preferences => proxies Tab.
I am stumped, can anyone help me?

I'd post this in the network section. Not really my area of experise, but I think that a proxy basically acts as a buffer and performance enhancing server between your browser and the server where the content sits. I believe there are many reasons why you may have been denied access to the proxy...

    Not sure,

But I do know that if you're running Jaguar or Tiger, ISA Proxy is broken, use Authoxy.

Another good solution is SquidMan a front end for open source proxy server Squid
