Yeah, that's AMD's performance rating when compared to a Pentium 4. In other words, it's supposed to perform as well as a Pentium 4 running at 3.4 GHz. AMD used performance ratings before, but the current rating set is more up to par than the previous one was. I remember having an AMD 5x86 PR133 which only performed as well as a 75 MHz Pentium. When AMD announced that it would be using PR ratings again on its Athlon XP and later chips, people were afraid of history repeating itself. Thankfully, this wasn't the case and now you actually see the matched performance. This is also the reason why Intel decided to use the numbers it uses now (ex: Pentium M 755). This was to make it difficult for the consumer to tie AMD's performace rating to an Intel CPU. Not that this much to deter consumption of AMD chips over Intel's.

There is one factor that no one has mentioned yet. There are a lot of "die hards" who want the capability to boot into OS9. The G3 iBooks have that capability. So if one has a legacy app that doesn't run well in classic, then the G3 iBook would be the one to have. The same thing may happen when the "Macintels" are released. Someone may have an older app which either hasn't been ported to the Intel chip, or the upgrade would be expensive. So those G4s and G5s may retain their value for a long time.

I like Macs, but some of us still have to come to grips with reality. Even my 700 dollar PC makes a good match for my G5 in a few things Last edited by HateEternal; December 10th, 2005 at 05:47 PM. |

After all the problems I had with my G3 iBook (six logic board failures!!!), I would never ever buy one second hand. What I found interesting to read, not too long ago, is that some iPods (was it the mini iPod?) sold for a higher price on eBay than what they cost when they were still available!!! Crazy!!! patrice patriceschneider.com/apple-osx/blog/ |

People can form some strange emotional attachments to objects. I have the last of the G4 Powermac series, which is a good computer for me. I was contemplating how I could justify buying a mactel, whenever they become avaialble. Tha was until someone told me that if I ever decided to sell that I should call him. Sigh. It's going to real entertaining to see what happens to the value of the "used" g4 and G5 Powermacs. But it's not just computers. Mid Century modern as it's called is all the rage now. I grew up during that period and I thought and still think most of that style is "art yucko".

I have an iBook G3 with Airport 2.0 card installed. Also have a Link SYS router in home that tenant connects to and others can successfully connect to on their laptops. BUT…I cannot connect! Can’t even get onto the Internet through my old method of dialup AOL anymore!!! I’m absolutely no wizard at this stuff and need someone with patience to help me reconfigure, etc. The system gets stuck in a loop asking for a password of which I have no idea what it is….bad grammar but surely someone can take a minute to chat with me? Thanks Cherrio |
