| Is it me or has apple shot themsleves in the foot? << DISCLAIMER: I like Apple, i do, but all i am doing here is venting my displeasure. >> Ok. I understand that Steve must innovate, but that doesn't mean that they have to create a application 'heavily based on' some one else's program. The least they could have done is asked Konfabulator wether they can use it, I know that i wont be using Dashboard, I've used Konfabulator and un-installed it in about a 2 weeks, just didn't do what i wanted it to. It was too separated from the OS, and i don't think Dashboard will make this any better. I personally thing that Apple has gone too far with this, Tiger doesn't look that good really, too flashy, no noticeable constancy, the GUI although still Brushed Metal, is curved! What's the point! If any thing i would like custom themes that enhance the OS, and with these 'widgets' being all different colors, it ruins it. I mean if i want to do basic math, ill open calculator.app, so there is no need for one on my desktop. I can understand the release date, but really I see it as a ploy to see what XP long horn will look like. The displays do look wonderful, but 1K over a G5! thats stupid! unless they are waiting for the other displays are depleted and replacing them with the new ones, that would make much more sense. What is the point of building graphics features into the OS (Core) when they require a faster machine to run on? (even though I've never been able to get QE working properly), Before releasing this Apple should make sure that the majority of the user base can use it, or you'll have another G3 scandal on your hands. All I'm saying is that Tiger doesn't seem to have any 'killer features' nor does it look like it will be slicker or faster. The only things i can see myself using is the Safari RSS, but even then. </rant> PS: apologies if this makes no sense, not feeling too good today. |

| No one complained when Apple integrated faxing into the OS even though FaxSTF already had a faxing program for the Mac. Heck, the built in faxing in OS X can even automatically email faxes to where ever you want. LCD displays are a lot still, and Apple's displays(especially the 30") always beat out most of the other ones in terms of quality. They're not making their LCD monitors for home users, unless you are a rich home user that just wants one. Have you seen the price for HDTV LCD screens? They are more than Apple's monitors, at a bigger size, but they are still a lot lower resolution. The person who will be buying the 30" monitor is the person doing pro video editing who already has the G5 and the money to burn for this monitor.

| Can you find a 30" LCD display for cheaper? If so, not much cheaper. The price is fair for the 30", whether you compare it to the price of a computer or not. Kind of like complaining that your speakers cost more than the receiver... well, when you get that big and that high quality, yes, there's bound to be a point when the accessories cost more than the unit they're intended to work with. Perfectly normal. I just looked up a 30" NEC LCD display, and it's a few hundred dollars more than Apple's display. I challenge anyone to find a comparable 30" display that's significantly cheaper. And Tiger with no killer features? Howabout the low-level audio/video integration? That means peformance, plain and simple. And system-wide indexed searching is phenomenal. Automator is the first of its kind on any modern desktop OS (first meaning 'done right'). 64-bit support throughout the system, so people will stop whining. XCode 2.0 is wonderful for developers. The new H.264 codec is something out of a science fiction novel. Dashboard may be too colorful (I'm sure it's to introduce discernability between widgets), but it's a hell of a lot quicker to push a button and have a calculator zoom into view rather than hunt for it in the Dock or in the Applications folder -- it's a rip-off, obviously, but give it time. If the guys at Konfabulator really thought they had something groundbreaking, they should have patented it. No patent = no rights, and they knew this from the beginning. No one deserves to be ripped off, but you're kinda asking for it if you put it out there and don't protect it. There are plenty of new features in Tiger to keep us all happy. I don't understand what people are so disappointed about. We have super-fast G5s, a true 64-bit system coming, and some of the best peripherals in the industry. Our OS is more advanced than most other OSs out there. Apple just released a slew of new things, including the first portable, 802.11g base station that fits in the palm of your hand with integrated stereo hookup and wireless printing -- with great integration with the OS. Again, for the 12th time, this was a developers' conference. Any developer right now is drooling over the new stuff introduced at the developers' conference, while the people who aren't developers really didn't get that much stuff -- but what did you expect? Perhaps it was the expectations themselves that are disappointing so many people and not the actual keynote.

| Browni: you're not a developer, are you? ...kind of like me attending a Tupperware party and then complaining my ass off about how disappointing it was. Well, guess what?! I don't enjoy Tupperware! That doesn't mean that it was a disappointing party, though -- I should have known it wasn't for me before I opened my big mouth and started complaining about it. I'd like to hear from a true software/hardware developer that thought this WWDC keynote was disappointing. I couldn't care less about non-developers -- their whining and complaining and disappointment means nothing to me, or anyone else for that matter. You weren't the intended audience, so your opinion means jack concerning the likeability of the keynote.

| I would say that it's an issue of brand awareness. The name bears the selling point. Only 'geeks' or 'know-it-all' would've thought 'Oh, Konfabulator was first...' Given that - check out konfabulator's web site. Interesting. I think I'll rather wait Q1 2005 ![]()
