Newbie Question on Displaying text

I'm trying to get a grasp of Xcode, but having issues. The only programming language I know is Java so this is very new to me.

What I'm trying to do is make a list books, in a navigation list, and then when you click it, you see a long book. Simple enough right? well, not for me.

My preference is to edit the SQL sample on Apple Dev's site, and then do it that way because I understand the concept of SQL, plus it makes it easy in the future to add or delete items. The problem is that I can't figure out how to edit it so that I could have a long text box that I can paste the book into and have it non editable. Where do I go from here?
