A number of those "low-ballers" use template-driven design as well. I am under the firm belief that you really do get what you pay for. If a client tries to tell you that XYZ company can do it for half the price, then my reply is always, "You get what you pay for." One of the best skills a designer can have is the skill of saying, "no." If a client is unwilling to pay what you're asking, then you're better off not doing work for that client.
