You don't need to subscribe to .mac. You can get a free account from AOL.

There's the link to get a free screen name. If it doesn't work go to aol.com, click on AIM then select "get free aim name"

Thanks for the reply Ocean... however, I actually want to use the iChat interface as it looks great. Do I need a .mac account to do that?

You don't need a .mac account. Just select "AIM account". See:
