Unhappy New to OS X, problem with StuffIt Expander

I've recently made the switch from PC to Mac and for the most part I love it. I'm having a bit of a problem, though.

Whenever I try to open a file with a .sit extension, Word trys to open it and I can't seem to find StuffIt in 'open with.' I know I have it, as .zip files open with it. Also, .bin files try to open in VLC and I have the same problem.

I'm a little confused as to how things work on a Mac. I've only had my MacBook for about two weeks.

Any suggestions?

Locate the .sit file and select it.
Choose Get Info from the Finder's File menu (or keys: Command I)

When the Info window opens look down till you see "Open With" and select Stuffit.

You can also choose "Use this application to open all documents like this." in the same section of the menu.

The only problem with that is that I can't find Stuffit in the 'open with' section. I've searched in finder and nothing comes up, yet when I download zip files, the download dialog says 'open with stuffit expander' and stuffit opens them. Obviously, stuffit is somewhere or it wouldn't open other files. Why won't it show up, do you think? Is it supposed to be in the applications folder? Because it doesn't seem to be...

Download a fresh copy and try again. I'm not sure if some type of stuffit decompression isn't included in the base O/S install.

As to the .bin files, what do you propose to open them with?

On the Open with drop down, at the every end is other...
click on other and then navigate toward application folder, and then find stuffit. You can verify that stuffit expander is in your application folder before hand. If not, either download it again and install it is your application folder.

"I know I have it" - you know you have it? LoL Classic Win user It's too hard to open applications folder and look for it? It's 5 sec. job! Maybe you opening zip.-s with BOMArchiveHelper by default? Just be shure to have latest Stuffit version and you must see it under open with...just like this:

I have opened applications to look. I've looked by hand and I've searched in finder and the 'open with' sections in 'Get Info.' The reason I've thought I had it is because when I download files, zips in particular, an option is 'Open with: StuffIt Expander (Default)' which led me to believe, despite my searches, that I must have it somewhere or those files wouldn't have unzipped once I'd downloaded them. I'm not a completely clueless Mac user. Just mostly clueless.

I downloaded a fresh version and tried to install it the other day. The installation icon bounced up and down a few times and then disappeared before installing anything, until today. Well, my problem finally seems to have been solved. Thank you for your help.

It's Built In

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archive_Utility

Took a little research, but wikipedia came through. I chose to paste link rather than just plagiarize. I really didn't want to install a stand alone stuffit when I knew I'd opened .sit files before. Just choose open with on a .sit and navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app

Make that the default and your extension is restored to a seamless built in function of OS X.
