How to open a network address using it's ip number?

My internet provider offers acess to an internal network with lots of files, so user can download/ upload stuff without having to pay for traffic (I have a limited account). Anyway, in Windows I used to type the ip address of the server in the Start>Run tool. Or type it in the address bar of Internet Explorer, like this: \\123.45.67.89

Now, how can I do that in my mac?! I tried to do as I did with explorer in Safari and Firefox and nothing worked.

From the desktop, press command-k or in the finder menu click Go/Connect to Server - type the ip number in the server address slot.

When I try to open this way I get an error message saying the server doesn't exist or is out of service but at the same time I can acess this server through windows...

What exactly does the "\\" in the URL mean? I can only guess that in Explorer, this denotes a particular protocol, but it's not a standard notation, so it's no wonder it doesn't work in Safari. Have you tried entering http://123.45.67.89 or ftp://123.45.67.89 in Safari?

If it's an SMB server, then go to the Finder and select Go > Connect To Server, then enter smb://123.45.67.89

Ok, it worked. I typed ftp://123.45.67.8 etc and it openened in a new window. What can I say... I'm just loving my mac! Wouldn't go back for nothing, and I'm seling my desktop PC to buy a Mac Mini ! Thanks for the help!

If you had fetch, transmit, or some other ftp program you could probably use that approach as well.
