Batch Repair of mp3 ID3 tags

I had an odd experience with iTunes on OS X yesterday.

I imported some mp3 files from my PC into my iMac's iTunes, then made some changes to the tags, updating track and artist information.

However, whenever I played any of the mp3s in iTunes, the tags would revert to what they were on import, and my changes were lost. I tried several options in iTunes, including the Advanced/Convert ID3 tags to no avail.

It is probably relevant to note that the mp3s were of unknown origin (meaning they were emailed to me by a friend, and I have no knowledge of what software was used to create them in the first place)

The workaround I found was to return to my XP workstation, and batch re-encode the mp3s with Adobe Audition, changing the bitrate. After that, I deleted the files in the iTunes library, imported the re-encoded mp3s, and all worked fine.

My question is this: how could I have achieved the same result without using my XP workstation? What software is available on OS X that can do batch audio file conversions, re-encodings, ID3 tag repairs?

I have been using Adobe Audition since before it was bought by Adobe, back when it was called Cool Edit Pro... It is not available for Mac, and it is one of the few Windows applications I think I would actually miss.
I have read some interesting things about Audacity, though I have not tried it yet. Its user forums often mention problems with batch processing.

Any other recommendations?

Thanks for any help.

I don't know but have you tried "Audacity".
