how do i know if ive got os x?

i installed the installation cd but it froze my mac, how can i tell if its actually installed, the hardrive just says macintosh hd. also, loads of downloads wont work and say failed to mount even though it says the download is for mac os x. please help! thanks

Hello mra99 & welcome to the forums

Click on the blue  icon in the upper left of your screen and select "About This Mac" to see what version of OS X is installed ...

What version did you have and what version are you trying to install? Is the installation disc a Full Retail Version? It should have a large X on the label if so.
