Dovecot help

I've searched the forum and the posts I've found seem to be too outdated to help.

I'm trying to set up dovecot on my mac. v1.0-beta3 from darwinports.

Anyway, I can get it running, but I can't authenticate. I'm just tryin the basics right now: no ssl, plain login, etc. I just want to authenticate the users that already exist on the box. Anyone know how to do this? I've been through all the documentation I can handle and I just can't put it all together.

So what user side configuration have you done already and what mail client are you using?

I take it you've updated the protocols line in the dovecot.conf file to include pop3/pop3s?

I've only used fetchmail to test pop3 in the past - so may be of limited help to you - but I'll try
