lookupd maxes cpu - hdd spins too often

I say this before stating the problem because I'm not implying that there is a correlation between the two, but certainly a possiblity. I performed a Software Update to get the latest Security Update from Apple as well as the Airport update that came along with it. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that the lookupd daemon sporadically maxes my cpu and the hard drive spins up way more often than it did before. This all happens while no programs/apps are running AT ALL. I know the lookupd daemon has to do with hostname lookups, but can't for the life of me figure out why it is maxing my cpu time. I'm on a 17" Powerbook 1GHZ with 1GB of RAM. If anyone can offer a solution, I'd be much obliged.

TIA
LoadedMind
