debugging console applications

I am developing with Xcode, for educational purpose, console applications with basic console i/o. Using the debugger in step by step mode, when the program requires input, I cannot access the input window and the program cannot proceed. I tried the console drawer, but here it seems to accept only gdb commands. Any suggestion?
