general question about application install under Linux PPC

There are several ways to install software on Linux on Mac hardware.

In my case I'd like to update OOo and I have two ways:
yum
OOo install

My question is: how do both installers cooperate ? If I try to update my current OOo 1.0.2 with yum, it doesn't find it. If I try to install with OOo installer, it does install, but the old version remains in place and the new version is not recognized by YDL.

Should I wait for yum to recognize the new OOo ?
