Need help with console

Need help with console

When I type in ">console" at the logon screen, it goes into console mode properly but after an unkown amount of time afterwards pulls out a blank blue screen with now control options, only option is to hold down pwr button for reboot. Does anyone know what is causing this and how do I fix it?

My system is a 15" powerbook G4 w/1.67Ghz Any help would be much appreciated.
