Convert AVCHD format on iPad from Sony HDR SR12

I am new to the board and i need to find answers.
I have used my Sony HDR SR12 for one year. And now i have put all the recordings on my computer . But i found the videos are all with AVCHD format. And i want do some conversion to let these videos playable on my iPad.

The statistcs of AVCHD file are:
Image Size:1440*1080;
video codec:AVC
Audio CodecOLBY Digital

Try Handbrake. I'm not sure if it reads AVCHD, but it's a good tool to have anyway, and it's free.
