    afp users

It would indeed kill the connection. If you kill the smbd process that that particular user is conencted to then yes, it would disconnect that user. AFP works with the same rules. Kill appleshare and you disconnect the user.

    NetInfo networks

Well, it's not really a waste of time as thats where the user management in Mac OS X is going as they move away from the older netinfo system. I am sure there are ways where you can share points automount within netinfo in Mac OS X Client, but there are 2 different databases in Mac OS X...

    Server newbie asking for direction

In my opinion, it all depends on what you are more interested. Linux is all the rave right now, but to me it seems that it's more to do with the developing GUI environments that are being included in them that make them more user friendly. The basis on the the networking feature of Linux is...

How do i share iCal calenders over a network

If you are using a Mac OS X Server with Apache and have the webdav module enabled, you have to be careful with your apache config files. If you have to the "dav digest" configured in your server, you have to ensure that the authentication is basic as iCal for some reason cannot publish to secure...

    NetInfo networks

Well the basis here that you have to understand is that to get a client to "bind" to a netinfo database, you need to have a netingo with more capabilities than what is built into Mac OS X Client. There are however other ways to bind your clients to a parent server. One of the best ways to do...

Will the XServe meet my company's needs?

In my opinion, if you are looking to create a new Active Directory Server running on your XServe, you will be in for a touch of work turning it into your PDC. If you are serious about turning it into your main Domain Controller, you may want to look at the article written by the good guys...

Check this company out. They have an application called casper that allows you to clone booting up off of a netboot image and installing across the network. They also have a beta program that runs off of any type of SQL server which allows you to take control of a machine through a web browser...

    NetInfo networks

Why would you have your netinfo master db on a 10 client? I am not sure I follow here. With Mac OS X Server, you can have all the machins bind to the parent without any problems. All you need to do is go into directory access on the clients and type in the connect to netinfo parent under the...

    Thoughts on Tues releases?

Everything i hear though is that the new 15 inch ALBooks will have a smaller resolution than that of the current TiBook. I would go for the current myself, but it's just my preference. More real estate for your buck!

Networking between Mac OS X and Windows XP

I believe that the auto sensing ports are only on the high end power macs and the laptop line. I could be totally wrong. I know my powerbook has the capabiliities as do the pro series macs, however I didn't think the iMacs had these ports on them. You may be right since you have the iMac...

Networking between Mac OS X and Windows XP

Uhm, just a quick note here. If your "cable" is connected from Mac to PC with no hub, switch, router, etc inbetween, you can keep trying till the damned cows come home hammered out of their mind on White Russians, but she aint never gonna work You need a crossover cable. Now with that...

Window title bar moves behind OS menu bar.

Have you tried throwing away the preference in ~/Users/localuser/Preferences? Might aleviate your problem as I believe the file holds the quardinats of the window upon reboot. Giver a go!

    Remote Login Woes

Just a quick suggestion. Have you gone into the /localuser/.ssh folder? I do not know where it resides on versions of BSD, however on Mac OS X and Darwin systems it resides in your home folder i.e. ~/Users/username/.ssh Once in there maybe you should blow away the known_hosts file...

    Dock Position

I think that you can do this right from within the display setting. You can choose which monitor you want to be your main and which one you want to be your secondary. Once you select which monitor has the menu bar on it, you can modify the position of the dock to have it at the bottom as you...

Apple is fully moving towards full LDAP compliance. I was at a seminar on the Xserve when it was released in Canada and the engineers kept talking about how LDAP was going to replace the Netinfo DB in the next releases since integrating LDAP into exisiting Windows networks and having windows be...
