UNSAFE - VPN ignores ipfw firewall (10.6)

It appears to me that when connecting with a VPN, Snow Leopard ignores the ipfw firewall, letting all traffic in. The situation is this. I'm connecting to a commercial VPN provider, and I am given a public IP address. Suddenly my Mac, which was otherwise protected behind a NAT router, is...

Statistical Prediction for App Store Rollover

Based on Apple's counter toward the One Billionth download on the App Store, I made a little widget that calculates the general time of the One Billionth download. Have fun and good luck! http://iharder.freepgs.com/2009/04/13/when-will-the-app-store-cross-one-billion/ -Rob

iLife 09 Display Calibration Goofed - FIX

When I installed iLife 09 today I noticed right away after the reboot that my monitor was too bright -- washed out. The fix: I opened System Preferences -> Display -> Color and Voila, it fixed itself. It's like it said, "Oh, right, sorry. I knew that." -Rob

    Observations about iPhoto 5

If you find something interesting, put it here. 1) Earlier post...iPhoto 5 doesn't seem to tag imported images with ColorSync profiles. Rats. 2) I dragged a bunch of AVI and other video clips onto iPhoto 5...good...guess which file format it didn't like? MP4! :o -Rob

    Observations about iPhoto 5

I just got iLife 05, and iPhoto 5 has no mention of ColorSync tagging upon import, and I've not been able to do any experiments. Rats. I was hoping not to have to use Image Capture for so simple a need. -Rob

    Security Update 2004-12-02

I installed it, and now my mac hangs on startup with a "starting login window" message. SSH-ing I see from a crash log this message: ********** Host Name: Owl Date/Time: 2004-12-04 07:45:51 -0600 OS Version: 10.3.4 (Build 7S148) Report Version: 2 Command: loginwindow...

USB cable works with Motorla V66 phone

Good point about the voice dials. When I "reset devices" my voice dials go away. Of course I don't reset often, but I do it more than I'd like to have to. -Rob

Anyone have Mosaic for X11 (on Mac OS X)?

Does anyone have Mosaic running under X11 on Mac OS X? I cannot successfully compile it from sources. I remember someone had posted a binary back in OS X 10.0 days, but I've long since lost that binary. And since someone's bound to ask, "Why?" the answer isn't so much nostalgia as having a...

Extra punctuation and characters just appearing

Got 10.3.1. Extra punctuation characters are starting to show up, particularly with the apstrophe and period. For instance if I type the word "isn't" I end up with two apostrophes, or often when I type a period and then return, I get two periods (but not until I hit the return key). This...

iChat (AV or not) with NAT?

Firewalls. NATs. Depending on your setup, one or the other is the evil monster/daring hero. Oh well. In general too I just wish there was a more elegant solution to NAT port forwarding than using fixed IP addresses adn whatnot. -Rob

    iChat AV technology

I didn't pick up on "open source," but I thought he said they used open standards like H.263 and whatnot. There ought to be some kind of "advanced" mode in iChat AV where you could punch in someones IP address directly if they have some other software that's h.263- and whatever-else- compliant...

iChat (AV or not) with NAT?

    1. Can anyone confirm whether or not iChat AV works when you're behind a Network Address Translation (NAT)-style router? 2. Can you tell which ports need to be forwarded if not? 3. How 'bout for transferring files via iChat: Has anyone ever figured out how to get that to work port-wise...

Any cp-like tools with a progress indicator?

Does anyone know of any cp-like unix command line copy tools with a progress indicator? When I copy large files (especially to/from WebDAV disks) it'd be nice to see how far through a file I am, but cp -v only gives more info on which files are being copied. -Rob

    Motorola TrueSync for cell phones?

I have a Motorola V66, and I can sync it with iSync and use it as a modem with the USB cable I bought on eBay for $5. http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33385 -Rob

USB cable works with Motorla V66 phone

I just got a "Motorola USB Data Cable Replacement for Motorola V60C/V66 Phones CMOTM01-03" from eBay for $5, and it works great with Mac OS X, both sync-ing with iSync 1.1 and as a modem (no additional software needed). Here's the review I wrote on Epinions.com...
