Running Linux virtual machines on OS X - possible?

Yes - you CAN install Linux on a VPC disk image and it runs just fine. Create a new VPC, select "Other System" for the type. Then restart the VPC with the Linux Distro CD in the disk drive and it will be recognized and the distro will startup and begin installation on your VPC. Very easy.

Installing Panther over YDL, wiping YDL completely?

You will have no problems after using YDL. As a matter of fact you can even make a dual boot OS X/YDL install. I used to have my iBook setup like that. I don't seem to remember either system seeing teh other's partition when it was running, but supposedly you can set it up to do that, and...

    Migrate fink safely to 10.3?

In most cases the /sw dir is self-sufficient. Meaning you should be able to move it without much trouble. I did and have seen no ill effect. If you are doing a straight upgrade to Panther you should have no problems. You might want to check your $PATH env variable and make sure /sw/bin is still...

[HOWTO] Update firmware on Linksys router

I have tried this technique over and over and over and it has never worked for me with my 4-port BEFSR41. Dunno what the problem is, but it always just times out and never sends anything via tftp. I have also tried using the Mac OS X tftp GUI client and it never completes either. The only way I...

Unfortunately, my iBook is well past the warranty period. Late 2001. I just tried all the fixes again yesterday, unplugged in OS X and got 5 mins before it shut down. FYI - I have rarely used the battery during its life. Maybe todat 25-50 times.

The issue has NOT Been fixed in recent Apple Updates including 10.2.6. My iBooks still suffers this problem. Gets to 80% then dies. e-mail client that does encrypted e-mail

THe free, open source version of PGP is called GnuPG. Works the same if not better than PGP (less flab). There is a plugin for Mail.app that works great with GnuPG (aka gpg). Install GnuPGP via pkgs from GnuPG site or via Fink. Can use old PGP keyrings too.

Tried a few things including chmtools - which is a command line tool athat runs in OS X. It works fine - but creates a dir full of horribly named files. Finally found best solution was using HTML Help Workshop: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=14188 Run it in VPC, select chm and it...

Using applescript to open web browser and go to a site

Here's a little script I use that runs automatically every morning before I wake up. Then when I get my mornig coffee I can just sit down and all my news pages, etc are already open. While not strictly an AppleScript, it might help you out. This is a shell script that is launched by cron at a...

Compiling - under OS X vs. under Slackware

Even though you don't want to use Fink (which I highly recommend), the Fink site still has some good info about porting... so you might take a look at that. Without Fink - I think you will find compiling standard Unix code rather frustrating. I run Slackware as a server here, and also used to...

    Mounting An AFP Volume

mount_afp is not normally launched with with the -t option. If you run "mount -t ..." thats the same thing as saying "mount_afp" kind of like a shortcut, but I don't believe the "-t" option is even available in the "mount_afp" command. OzBert - when you use the mount_afp command in the form...

I just made a perfect copy of a Windows PC .iso. Use "Create image from device" and save as DVD/CD master in the save as dialog. Then change the filename to remove ,dmg.cdr and replace it with .iso.

    Safari v80

STAY AWAY FROM THAT .80 ... it is most certainly fake. Once installed you, and it doesn't work... you will have to jump through loops to get any older versions to run again.
