    Offline backups from App-store downloads

When purchasing/downloading OSX apps from the App store, is it possible to keep an offline backup as well? I've been told that you can simply copy the app itself from the /Applications/ folder, but of course that only assumes that the installer didn't spread lots of additional support files all...

    Networking Leopard + Tiger problems

I didn't know extra software was needed in order to limit folder/file access in MacOS Tiger. I've installed it now, but touched nothing as I don't quite understand it yet. Come to think of it, I probably shouldn't be surprised that I can access everything from my Powerbook when I'm on the iMac...

My Powerbook G4's DVD is region-free!

Aha! That changes everything. Loopyl00: Like Doctor X said earlier on it's up to someone to supply a new, region-free firmware for that particular drive. Without it there's nothing you can do, regardless of computer/operating system. Ask around nicely in the firmware forums (I used to hang...

My Powerbook G4's DVD is region-free!

I believe I read somewhere that you can (can sometimes?) still make a drive region-free even if it's locked to a specific region. Perhaps it's worth a go, even though I don't want to be held responsible if the drive ends up being a door-stop or something.

My Powerbook G4's DVD is region-free!

I'm the original poster of this thread. I understand the problem is that the firmware updater isn't Leopard compatible. I'm no expert, but wouldn't it be possible to boot the computer from a Tiger (MacOS 10.4.x) system DVD, then run the firmware updater from the computer's hard drive...

    Networking Leopard + Tiger problems

My household has a wired network (Ethernet) with two computers connected to a common router: a recent iMac running Leopard and a Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz version) running Tiger. I want to be able to transfer files between the two computers' desktop, but it only partially works. I have the...

My Powerbook G4's DVD is region-free!

As far as I understand you also still have a last chance to make it into an RPC-1 drive. I guess the worst thing that can happen is that you end up with a drive locked at one specific region. Don't hold it against me if anything goes wrong, but I think you'll be alright if you follow my...

    Creating a cabled network

I'd prefer to set it up without a switch. Only one of the two rooms will be assigned as a workroom (which is where the computer/printer goes), but in case I want to make the other room the workroom later on I want to have the LAN sockets there as well. I want to install LAN sockets in both...

    Creating a cabled network

I think you're misunderstanding me. Have a look at the two LAN lines going from the router to room #3 (brown and red cables). Each cable has to be around 50 feet long. Now, if I also wanted two LAN lines in room #4 I would have to add two more 50 feet long cables and attach them to an...

    Creating a cabled network

I should have mentioned that I already have a router which is connected after the cable-modem. See the attached diagram for my idea. Notice the small numbered boxes. Those are the ethernet wall-sockets. I understand that you can't connect several computers to the same line (as indeed is...

    Creating a cabled network

I would like to create a cabled network at home but don't really know which cables to get etc. I have two Macs sitting in different rooms and will possibly buy a multi-function networking printer later. I haven't decided where I want to place the printer yet. I would like to place several...

    New vs. old 20" iMac

How does the new 20" iMac (2.66 GHz) compare to the previous 20" model (2.4 GHz)? The new model is more expensive where I am. Will the new graphic card make any difference (I hear that Snow Leopard will take advantage of better graphic cards, possibly making the whole computer faster or...

    Changing Finder label colors

Yes, I want to change the available colors (e.g. I don't paritcularly like the green label, so I want to change it to a completely different green). If this is possible within MacOS it sure is hidden well. If not -is there a freeware/shareware tool that can help edit the available color labels?

Is it possible to change the colors of the Finder labels? I'm using MacOS 10.4.11.

DIY backlight replacement? g4 12" alum. pb

I realize this is an old thread, but as I'm struggling to open my LCD display and found this I thought I'd give it a go :) I've got a Samsung LTN152W6-L01 and it has a label with the same warning as you describe. However, I've been told that by removing that tape you can end up with uneven...

    Software for creating 3D graphs

That's pretty cool! It's from "Numbers" (part of iWork) isn't it? I found it after posting this message and have downloaded a free 30-day trial to check it out. I did at one stage consider getting iWork because I needed a proper word processor (I currently use NeoOffice), but Pages seemed all...

    Software for creating 3D graphs

I've conducted a little survey and would like to present my findings in form of one or several graphs or charts. Instead of the usual bar and pie charts we've all seen a thousand times, is there any software which allows me to do this in a more stylish and different way, like in a "3D" type...

Roxio Toast 8: download or buy CD?

Yes, you're probably right. What I do need to keep track of is the unlocking code. I always prefer paper manuals to read, but if it's no more than a leaflet or brochure kind of thing, and a "proper" manual as a PDF file on the CD I might as well just download the thing. Anyone know if the manual...

Roxio Toast 8: download or buy CD?

I want to buy Roxio's Toast 8 software, but I'm not sure if I should go for the download or a physical CD. The former will be the cheapest and I assume I'll receive it right away. - apart from Toast on a CD, what does the "physical" package contain? A paper-manual perhaps? - is it possible to...

My Powerbook G4's DVD is region-free!

Thanks. One of my goals when writing "how to" instructions is to keep things very clear and concise -there are lots knowledgeable people out there, but they often explain things in a very complicated way. Good question about the software version, which I don't know the answer of unfortunately...
