I haven't found an answer to the problem to be honest, so I just kept killing the process via activity manager. Crude but did the trick.

The problem went away as soon as I reformatted the drive as native Mac OS Journaled. Looks like it was some sort of a hiccup with FAT32.

Dudes... PSX consoles cost $5 at the closest to you thrift store. The one I sometimes visit for audio gear has about 10 in 'stock' on any given day. Just go and buy yourself some nostalgia medicine, for God's sake. I think I'm gonna go and buy myself a Genesis, and a 2600. Miss the two.

I've decided to disable iPhoto auto-launching whenever I connect the external drive (it is a pretty bad idea to begin with), but when I launched Image Capture, it just showed me "waiting for device", and stayed that way for a while, until I cancelled the Mass storage service. Pretty strange...
