I want to transfer files from my LCIII to my PowerBook G4. The LCIII only has a floppy disk drive and some files are too large to transfer by this means. Is there a cable of some sort that can connect the two? Is there another protocol that might work?

Thanks

Do you have them both on a network?, over which you could transfer files.

No, they are not on a network. I log onto my school's wireless network with my PowerBook, but my LCIII is at home. I'm not even sure how I would go about connecting the LCIII to the shool's network if I brought it into my office.

The only possible means of connection would be with special adapters to either the serial modem port or the SCSI port. I don't know what products would accomplish this. I'm putting you back in the pool as another tech might be more familiar.

(1) either you find a SCSI-to-Ethernet converter. This converter is discontinued so very hard to source. If you find a converter, you will also need an Ethernet (crossover) cable
(2) either you extract the hard drive, put in an enclosure which a SCSI-to-USB bridge and use it on your PB
(3) SplitVille allows you to cut big files in small pieces (put them on floppy) and join them back

Beth,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Your LC III is a mighty fine machine. And I do understand your predicament.

Your best way to solve this is to get an ethernet card for the LC and a cross over ethernet cable to network both machines.

What you need: LC type PDS card. I found a place where you can obtain one.
http://retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/m_net.html#lcnet

"Each of these LC slot cards below plugs into the LC-type slot, and has an RJ-45 connector for "10bT Ethernet" network connections. These cards should all perform similarly. Price for any card, cut to $15 each"

Ordering information is here:

http://retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/mailto.html

You can email to: herbjohnson@comcast.net (alternative email : hjohnson@retrotechnology.com - only if the first one gets no response).

You can also find several at ebay with a search for LC Ethernet Card.

The only alternative that I can think of is to get a Zip drive for both computers, a SCSI for the LC III and a USB for the iBook. Then move files back and forth via a Zip disk. You will need to use Zip 100 MB as the SCSI drive will only read those.

I hope this helps you.
