I have just bought a new G5 [OS 10.3.9] and wish to completely clear out my old titanium G4 laptop [OS 9.1 and 640mb memory/ 400 Mhz/ hard disk 9GB], reload it with the new software that came with the G5.
Do I start it up from the OS X cd and reformat the entire hard disk or what? Will it be terribly slow..? Should I upgrade to 10.4 before I do this?
thanks
Dennis

(1) first of all I would check if my G4 does not require a firmware update to allow OSX to be install on. I'm quite sure you need one. I thing the FU-Firmaware 428. See Apple pages for this. Updating the firmware can only be done on os 9.x
(2) Then I would update 9.1->9.2.1->9.2.2 because this last os contains all the information for a better OSX compatibility
(3) Then I would suppress all the pgms I do need anymore on my 9 Applications folder.
(4) Then I would install Panther or Tiger over: the 922 will become the Classic part of the OSX. Be carefull, I'm not sure that the DVD/CD which came with your G5 can install OSX on a G4. I always the official Jaguar/Panther retail version on the AppleStore and I know that these versions can be installed on all the machines which can handle Mac OsX.
For instance, the Tiger DVD which with my iMac G5 cannot install Tiger on a Powerbook
These are steps I run to migrate my G3 to Panther.
Feel free to ask more questions if you have doubts on some of these points.

Phil thanks.. but if I do not want to use any OS 9 programs or classic, what then-- can I go straight to OS X?
or do I still need to upgrade 9.1>9.2 etc in order to upgrade firmware?

No,
You can do it from 9.1

Thanks Phil
Powerbook Firmware updated..
Questions:
1 ........ I don't need classic mode-- do I still have to go 9.1>9.2.1>9.2.2?
2 ........ assuming I do, what do you mean by "suppressing" the programs I don't need. Uninstalling?
3 ........ presumably I have to pay for the upgrades 9.2.1>9.2.2?
Thanks again!

(1) You can stay in 9.1 even if the 921 and 922 updates are free
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...tnum=120030-en http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186
(2) Panther needs around 4GB for the system (don't forget to specialize the installation process by suppressing unwanted languages and no needed drivers for printers)+ the same for security (swap,...)

Keep at least more than 35% of you disk drive free. Under 25% of free, you're in danger.
On my 10GB G3, I have first clean the "Applications folder" for all the applications I do not need anymore (I just keep the HP Scanner software). I never touched to the System 9 folder.
Than I install panther over.
(3) When I'll throw away the scanner, I will simply put in the trash the "Applications 9" folder and the "System 9" folder. Simple. That's my "uninstalling" way of working ;-)
