Since I upgraded to OS 10.3.9 it doesn't recognize my film scanner or any of my SCSI hard drives.
Minolta Dimage Scan Multi
Jazz Drive
450 MHz PowerPC G4
I don't remember what type of SCSI card I installed 6 years ago.
Can you help?
Thank you,

HI, one of the problems us SCSI users are having to face, is the fact that built in support for SCSI in Macs is pretty mucha thing of the past.
This does not mean that you can't use SCSI, I still do for several devices, but I absolutely had t omake sure that the SCSIcard I had had drivers that were compatible with OS X.
There are pretty much only 2 manufacturers of SCSI cards for macs in the Major market and these ar Atto and Adaptec, I am pretty sure that Adaptec is beginning to move away from Macs leaving Atto.
If you have a SCSI card installed you absolutely have to have Mac OS X 3.9 compatible drivers andn if you have forgotten which card you have, you are going to have to find out.
A few years ago there were quite a few cards around, but not any more.
You might try opening About this Mac under your apple Menu and selecting More Info. This will bring up all the hardware in your Mac and when you check the PCI slots you might be able to get the SCSI card name from there.
If not, you are going ot actually have to open the Mac and take a look at the card itself, and contact the Manufacturers to see if the have updated Drivers.
Failing all that you will need a new SCSI card and Atto is probably your best bet.
I would imagine the Scanner is using the Big Old Centronics connector and most of the cards these days support the Higher Density SCSI Connectors so you will need some adapters. You can find all this stuff around still.
If you do have to get a new SCSI card, you might want to talk to Atto to ensure that their card will run you Scanner.
If you had it all running under a previous OS X, you might want to go back to that version, as you are not going ot get the support for SCSI in Tiger.
It has been really annoying for me as I have SCSI Raids and for every OS X Update I have had to update my drivers except ina few instances

Hi Stuart,
Thank you for your reply to my inquiry about OSX 10.3.9 and using SCSI drives. I finally just installed OSX 10.2.8 on an additional drive that I can open whenever I want to use the film scanner. It works, but it is a pain to have to restart, still, it's cheaper than buying a new film scanner.
Adaptec states on their website that they will no longer support upgrades for Mac.
Thanks again for your quick response.

I know exactly what you mean, I have a bunch of really expensive SCSI drives for recording Video (HD) on and that is about the last really good reason to have SCSI inn a Mac, but after the support was taken out in 10.3.9, I had to get all my SCSI stuff from Atto (Attotech.com). Thisis OK, but when you are using the kind of stuff Atto supplies you are getting into some real expense, especially with the dual chanel stuff that I have to have.
I dropped Adaptec about 2 years ago because in the end although less expensive they were more hassle than they were worth. Of course nowadays with Fireiwre 800, even the SCSI RAID system is getting old.
I will still use it until the thing finally dies because in the bottom line SCSI in that application is still faster.
I did try a firewire to SCSI adapter but it never really worked properly anyway.
Well at least now you have a workaround, and I think you might be surprised at how many people do exactly what you are doing.
On one of my systems, I have an os 9.22. boot drive, and OS 10.2 boot drive and 2 different 10.3.?? boot drives. It is a pain but at least I don't have to go out and buy a ton of new equipment, at least not until the old gear finally dies.
Changing the OS every year just can get too expensive when you have a lot of gear.
