My G4 Quicksliver happliy running Mac OSX 10.4 for the last year will no longer start up - it poers up ok, normal start up chime, gets to the grey screen with the Apple logo and then stops and won't progress any further.

I've removed all the USB and Firewire cables, even removed the 2 PCI cards I installed.

My next options are: Change the clock battery and remove the second hard disk?

Any other suggestions?

I can't open the CD bay to reboot from the install DVD

Why can't you open the drive bay? There are several ways you should be able to do this. One would be to start up holding down the Option key, this gives you a choice of bootable drives to start up from. While at that screen, try opening drive bay, insert disk, click on the round (reload choices) arrow on the left. If drive bay will not open with normal button try straightened paper clip in the tiny hole next to it. Let me know how you make out with this.

Another option if you have one of these, is to start up from a firewire hard drive or DVD drive with bootable disk in that.

Another option would be to start up in single user mode, but let's see if you can get the drive bay open first.

best,

Beverly

Thanks for the help - used a friends external Firewire drive to boot up from - couldn't see where to insert the paper clip (not as you desrcibed). Hard Disk has some bad blocks, so it looks like I'll need a new one
