Suddenly my computer (G4 dual 500, 1024 mb ram, 40 gb Maxtor) doesn't boot. It stops at the grey screen just before the apple symbol would normally be seen. Anything I can do? IDE cables have been switched, the jumper wasn't moved but was changed to make sure it wasn't faulty.....I am bewildered.
By pressing Command or Option or some combination on startup I was able to get another screen that had 2 boxes. One had a circular arrow and the other had a straight arrow. When I clicked either of them nothing happened though there was a tiny clock that indicated it was busy doing something. But after a few minutes....nothing. Another combination of startup keys produced the flashing OS 9 or Classic indicator that there was nothing to boot up with. Its position was in the center of the screen. Suggestions?

Howdy!
If you hold the option key you get the pre-boot screen that lets you choose the system you want to boot in (those icons are your available systems). The "bent arrow" lets you scroll SLOWLY through the options, you can only see two systems at a time. The "straight arrow" on the right boots in the system you've chosen.
I recommend first starting up and zapping the PRAM (preference memory). Might solve all your issues: hold command (apple/clover key) + option + p + r keys, let the restart chimes go three times, release the key combo on the fourth time.
Hopefully this gets things back in order. If it does, you'll want to boot up with your system disk and do a full Repair Disk. DO NOT REINSTALL OS X, but go to File/Open Disk Utilities to repair disk.
Let me know if this helps.

"Release the key on the 4th time."....?
Does that mean exactly on the 4th chime? I tried all other combos including this one. Same grey screen. (I used to like the color grey - now I'm not so sure.)

As long as you hear the restart chime at least three times you're fine.
So still not working?

exactly the same as before.
Is it possible to download a CD image from a friend, burn it on a PC and have it load on a Mac?

Why would you burn a disc image from a pc and use it on your mac?
Find your OS X system disk and run Repair Disk. Have you done this yet?

I bought the system used and he hasn't given me the OS yet on CD. Though that might come any day now. I've been looking for a used copy of Tiger haven't had any luck. (Its against my religion to my new....

If you can't get the machine to boot you might need to take it in to an authorized mac dealer/repair shop.

I'll think I'll just use this to upgrade to Tiger.

Whoah. Tiger may just add to your problems!
You need to first find out if you have a hardware issue before you jump into the bleeding-edge world of Tiger…that's what I recommend.
Tiger has issues even on the most "Trouble Free" of computers so unless it has some firmware updates that will bring your computer back to life that I don't know about (possible but unlikely). That's why I recommend getting your computer's hardware getting checked out.
