I have just updated to 10.3.8 from 10.3.7. Now I can't repair permissions. It just gets stuck when I select "hard drive' on the left.

I have tried to update to 10.3.9, but th wheel just keeps spinning on the installer. it's a big blank gray window with a gray X.

I can't boot from a cd because I don't have the cd.

What can I do?

Welcome on macosx.com

I suppose that after he update, the mac has rebooted. Right ?
So despite the DiskUtility program, could you use the mac: iTunes, iPhot , TexEdit..
Or not ?

Could you download the 10.3.8 combo
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1038combo.html
and try to install it over the 10.3.8
Does the installer also hangs ?

Regards
Philippe

Still freezes on the big gray X! I'm pretty stuck with this 10.3.8. I can't get past the initial installer screen. (I tunes does work though.) I have rebooted - zaped the pram, rebuilt the classic desktop.....

anyother ideas?

Could you unplug all peripherals (except the keyboard and the mouse) and make tests again

Still no good. Some other problems that may or may not be related, are that Illustrator crashes when I try to select a font and it takes my system about 5 minutes to reboot completely. I don't know if these help to see the problem, but these are also issues I'm having with this system.

My two last ideas..

(1) based on this note
---
Software Update could unexpectedly quit when installing software that includes a license agreement, such as QuickTime or Java. This happens if the "Times RO" font is installed on your computer
--
If you have this font in FontBook, disable it

(2) based on
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25398-en
Creates a new acount and give him the admin privilege
Use this new account to use DiskUtility (are you able to to select the drive) ?

Changing to a new user, then installing 10.3.9 worked! In fact, it boots up in half the time now. however, I am still having a problem with Illustrator 10 crashing the system when I try to scroll the fonts.

Thanks for all your help!

So, it works with the new admin ?
if so, that's want to say that the old admin has sometthing corrupted in its prefs.

About Ilustrator
Run Fontbook (Applications); how many fonts do you have ?
I say that because on G3 10.3.9 I fix a Photoshop crash by disabling in the fontbook some fonts with, I believe, strang names.
But I confess never install nor use Illustrator

I'll search for the Illustrator issue

Philippe

I followed the font advice you gave me and I also updated to Illustrator 10.0.3. It is now working properly. I don't know which one or if both together worked, but either way, it's fixed. I think I am now in the clear. Thanks for all your time today!

Brooke, I'm happy to help you to fix the problem
About the corrupted 'old' admin account, I've no idea if it would be good to delete this account or not
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=151625
Of course, I know that deleting an account (a backup image create in a Deleted Users folder) works, but when Apple speaks about "users file" in the article, I do not know what this implies (keychain,..). So my advice would be to keep it (it takes around 250 mb of space) beside the current working one

Thank yoou for using macosx.com and have fun with your Mac
Philippe
