Mel,

I'd love to help you out with this. I understand how frustrating the "beach ball of death" is. We have a couple of options. I see that you're on Leopard, so I'd like to see if you'd be open to doing a screen-sharing session so that I can take a look at your Activity Monitor and pinpoint exactly where the problem is. Rest assured, you can force quit the session at any time by pressing Command-Esc.

I've experienced this problem with other users, so I think I have an idea what may be going on. If you don't feel comfortable with screen sharing, take a look at Activity Monitor closely. Make sure you've set it to view "All Processes" and then sort the columns by CPU, so that the most used is at the top. Then, let me know what is sucking up the power.

Mel,

I can hear your frustration! I'll do my best. Screen sharing is done through iChat. So, you'll need to open iChat. I keep standard business hours. My screen name is "koobiluphi@mac.com" without the quotes. Send me a message, let me know it's you, and we'll get started.
