DESCRIPTION:
I downloaded a firmware upgrade for my GlobalVillage 56K modem to make it v90 compliant. Following the upgrade, I was unable to use the modem. I assumed that the modem was damaged however, I put it in another machine and it worked perfectly. The modem was set for COM2 with IRQ 3. I placed an older modem without plug and play set for com2/irq3 into my machine and it failed to operate also. The motherboard is equipped with 2 serial ports. I use COM1 for a serial mouse and I disable COM2 in the CMOS setup. It appears that following the firmware upgrade, windows by default continues to re-enable the second com port on the mother board. I believe that is why I am having this major problem. Setting the modem to COM4 has not helped. Is there a registry setting which will prevent windows from forcing an override of the CMOS setting. I deleted the 2nd com port from the device listing, removed the modem card, and on reboot, windows re-enables the com port and adds it to the device list. Any suggestions???
Martin,
I would enable the both ports in the cmos. I alsways do on every system I build. You should be able to set the modem on COM2 IRQ 3. That is how my system is set right now. com 1 and 2 showing in system devices and modem set to com2 irq3
If your com ports are able to be set to autoconfigure in the cmos, then do so. This way you won't get any conflicts. Good luck, I know your frustration. Modems have been giving me a terrible time lately, especially the v.90's.
good luck with it.
