I have a ibook G4.
My son in order to prove this computer worthiness tried to "safe guard" my computer by trying to setup an administrator password.
Now whenever I start up my computer, i get this window saying "Administrators Computer" and asking for a user-name and password.
I do not know both. I have already tried reseting the password using the installer cd and the C key , but whenever I do this the apple logo just shifts sligtly to the right.
There is no boot menu or anything like that.
Isint there any way we can reset the password (or at least bring back the lost glory to my computer), using the command prompt.
I dont know much abut the mac osx, since i just use my ibook to browse the net and to type in documents.
Any sort of help will definitely be appreciated.

Sankalp,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. First, can your son remember what the password is? It sounds like he set up FileVault.
Have you tried using your own user password?
If your son did indeed set Security and a master password, you will need that password just to change it or turn off the security feature.
To reset the master password:
Try to log in to your user account. When you see the password hint appear after the third unsuccessful try, click "Forgot Password."
Type (or have the computer's administrator type) the master password and click Continue.
Read the warning message about your keychain and click OK to proceed, or click Cancel to stop.
Type a new login password for your account, then type it again to verify it.
Type a hint that will help you remember your password next time.
Click Login.
The trick is that you need that password.

Now when I start up the computer it says, Welcome to macos. Name , Password each fowllowed by textboxes.
I would like to try out the forgot password thing, but i dont lknow the username. is there any way i can get to know the username.
One last thing...Cant i just format my hardisk and reinstall OS X . Something commonly done in windows.

Sankalp,
When you first started your computer with OS X or after you first installed OS X, it prompts you for a user name and password. This password is needed to install programs and modify the system.
Since you can not remember the user name or password you will need to format and install OS X.
With the log in screen up, insert the OS X CD Disk 1 and restart the computer immediately holding down the C key. You need the Install OS X not the Restore or Update CD.
Once you see the installer screen, release the C key but do not click on the install screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the second icon at the far left, then click on The Erase button at the top of the right side. The right side of the window will change.
Now you will have a pull down menu next to Volume format. Select Mac OS Extended. Right under that you can name your hard drive. Click on Erase.
You will get a warning that it will totally erase your hard drive and you will not be able to retrieve your files. Click on Erase (or okay).
When that is done, you can quit Disk utility, then click on the Installer Screen and follow the prompts. Do the easy install or standard. This will make sure you have internet and printers.
Once done, you will need to restart the computer. The Setup Assistant will come up and you will need to select a user name and password. Remember what you select and write it down. You will need this user name and password to install your applications and programs.
Now you are set.
