I am making a move back to apple after more than 10 years.
I have just bought a 2GHz iMac which I'd like to connect on the Ethernet port
I am at present using Pipex as ISP, and I have one of "those" Thompson speedtouch modems, but I would like to try something different as my daughter will carry on using Windows and my wife will inherit my Acer centrino laptop(suposedly able to go wireless, though I had -I am giving up, now- nightmares attempting to connect on a "Belkin ADSL wireless modem with wireless router"... which I haven't solved for nearly a year!!!)
Can someone recommend the best and simplest setting and ADSL modem to keep all the family happy?
Sorry if this question has come before.
Javier

Hi,
I'm Greg, your Volunteer Tech. I sincerely enjoy helping people set up their Mac so they can enjoy using it. I try, through a series of short interactions with you, to get enough information to help you. Please don't expect me to solve the problem without giving me more info or not telling me when I haven't yet fixed the problem.
Javier,
The answer is that you need a router (maybe a wireless router in your case) to do this the right way. Then, the router is set up to do the PPPoE authentication once for averyone, and it shares the DSL connection to everyone. So, I'd keep the same modem and get a router.

Many thanks for your prompt advice!!!
Sorry; I am not thick; just inexperienced!
Do you suggest a new (maybe Netgear) ADSL modem with router on it, or installing a router over the modem I already have (dial up at present) on the Windows desktop machine and configure the iMac wireless directly?. Is this difficult?

Javier,
Get a new router to connect to the DSL modem you have now. Run ethernet cable to any computer you can reach and get wireless cards for the others.
Say good-bye to the dialup.

The problem is that my present modem is USB, and my ISP say they do not support wireless networks. I have been trying to connect a ADSL modem with wireless router but they throw me out (it connects only for 15 seconds!)

Now I understand. I can't recommend a DSL modem. My DSL modem came with Ethernet only. Have you talked to your ISP about a modem that supports ethernet (not a router built in)?
