My Grand-daughter can not log in to her AIM account any more. It had been working just fine, and no changes have been made to my knowledge.

After entering the user name and password in the sign in window, about a minute goes by and then the following message appears:
"The domain name server lookup for the specified host has failed. The host is unknown."

Clicking on preferences in the sign in window shows the host name "login.oscar.aol.com", port number 5190. We have verified with other users that this is correct. We downloaded the latest version of AIM, 4.7, and that version does the same thing as 4.6 which had been running fine. I booted from a back up disk running OS 10.3 and that no longer works either.

The computer is a dual G5 running OS 10.4.2. All the other internet programs, Mail, Safari, etc. are working fine. No other apps. are having any problems.

What am I missing?

Reginald,

You are not alone with this problem. I have the same problem and have been trying different combinations of ideas, with no luck.

We have two forum threads that are addressing this issue. It seems that not everyone has the problem.
http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=221591

http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229417

Rest assure that I will find a solution, it may take a little time.

Do you have a router connected to your computers?

Cheryl,

I think the problem may have something to do with Classic. My Grand-daughter created a birthday party announcement, using Coral Print House (Classic App.) just about the time AIM quit working. This morning I rebuilt the Classic Desktop (Classic was not running) and presto, AIM works. Unfortunately, I didn't try AIM this morning before rebuilding the Desktop, so I am not certain that was the fix.

We also had a power glitch last night, so the computer was powered off, which we don't normally do. Anyway it is something to try if other people have the same problem.

Reginald,

That was a surprise fix. I am glad you are back to chatting.

Your fix did not correct my problem, though.

Since your problem has been solved, I will close this ticket. You will get an email with a survey link. You can ignore it, as I really did not help you solve this.
