hi,

i have an i book G3 with an airport card. our downstairs neighbor kindly shares his wireless internet with my sis and i. my sister has a dell laptop and has n problem connecting to the network.

i, on the other hand, am unable to connect. the network "disable" shows up on the airport menu, but when i select it it says "there was an error joining the selected network". i tried holding down the control key and trying again and it still did not work. my computer is able to connect to other wireless networks without a problem. just this one gives me trouble.

my sister's computer details read:
IP address: 192.168.1.1oo
subnet mask 255.255.255.o
assigned by DHCP

what should i do now??

thanks!!

Hi Dana,

There are a couple of things to look at first.

Your Airport card only supports 802.11b (the older Wifi protocol). Could you ask your neighbour to check that his wireless router is set to work with 802.11b and 802.11g. It's possible that it's set to 11g only, which would mean you couldn't connect.

Secondly, is there any sort of encryption enabled that needs you to enter a key?

Thirdly, could you ask the neighbour if he has MAC filtering enabled on the wireless router. If he does, he needs to add your MAC address (MAC here is a network term rather than Macintosh) which you can find by opening System Preferences and choosing the Network option, then click on Airport and press Configure, and it will tell you the address it looks like aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff:gg

Lastly, if the network is protected with a password, can you ask if it's WEP 64, WEP 128 or WPA. If it's WPA there might be an issue with 10.2.8 not supporting that.

Let me know how you get on, and if you have no luck we can investigate some more options.

Marcus
