hi i have been using a airport extreme at work, i took it home to try out. I plugged it into my asdl at home, it works fine, but when i take it back to work i am unable to connect to the internet. I am able to connect to the network and other computers, i can print from a network printer also.
I'm not sure why i can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions would be great

Thanks
Chris

Chris,

If you can get see the other computers on the network, but cannot connect to the internet, it's probably some thing with the way that your work network is set up.

Can you tell me more about it? How big of a network is it? Do you have support through them, or is it unsupported? What's the IP address of your computer when you're physically plugged into your work network.

We can almost certainly get this working, I just need a few more details.

Let me know.

Good luck!

hi Cameron,

it's in a school setting, there are 5 imacs set through an airport, we have a tech that comes to the school but he is more concerned with the pc networks as most of the teachers are 'scared' of the macs. I have a ibook G4.
My ip address when connected is 10.69.195.96
router 10.69.195.1

thanks for your help

Chris,

What you'll probably want to do is set it up to bridge.

To do this, what you're going to do is first of all configure it at home (this is os that the networking hardware at school doesn't disable it for trying to be a DHCP server).

Configure it to NOT be a DHCP server.

When you take it to school, you'll want to plug it into the network using the LAN port (looks like a <--> instead of the WAN port which is a circle.

This will make it just act like a bridge. It will pass all the wired traffic to the wireless, and vice versa.

If it's set up like that, you should be able to get on the network and get out. If not, then the network guy probably just has some pretty strict security in place.

Let me know how it goes.

Good luck,
-Cameron

Hi Cameron,

Chris,
Sorry for the delay.

Here's what you do:
Plug in your airport at home and get on the network.
Open up the airport admin utility
Highlight your base station and click "Configure"
On the network tab, uncheck "Distribute IP Addresses"
On the "internet" tab:
-Connect using: Ethernet
-Configure: Using DHCP

Save those settings, and take it to school.

At school, plug it into the LAN port (not the WAN port), and you should be able to get on.

Let me know if you need more help.

Good luck!

cheers
