Hola,

I went to the Apple Store to get an Airport Card for a grey tower G4 with the shiny doors. The 20 something woman told me that it would be "wicked cool" for me to surf via the wireless technology.

She sold me an "airport express card" which didn't work. When I took it back, the guy at the Apple Store told me that I would need an old Airport Card.

I ordered one on-line. Is this what I really need? I was disappointed the people at the Apple Store didn't know more about what I needed.

Thanks.

Biff

If the Mac model you have is a first generation MDD or earlier model, then you need the old standard Airport card. These cards like the computers are now obsolete which is probably why the Apple store people didn't know more about it, although a competent store "Genius" should know or know how to find out.

Of course, Biff, you also could have read the Users Guide that came with your computer or consulted the tech specs for your model at Apple's support site. If you don't have the manual you can download a PDF version from Apple's support site.

Thanks. I did read the manual but made the mistake of taking the salespersons word over the manual. I did order an original airport card. Will I be able to hook that up to AirPort Express Base Station? Again, the sales person told me that it should work.

If you have thoughts, let me know.

Yes, it should work OK. I have a similar setup with two Quicksilvers and two TiPBs all using standard Airport cards. I use an Airport Extreme Base Station in conjunction with an 8-port switch, cable modem, and Vonage VoIP telephone adapter. Plus a couple of Airport Express units to extend the network's wireless reach throughout the house.

Here in Canada I have the AEBS, the Vonage adapter, and an Airport Express along with the cable modem. Two TiPBs connect by wireless and the Aiirport Express is used to stream iTunes to the stereo.
